Metatron’s Cube is an important geometric shape in sacred geometry said to have been invented and named by the 13th century mathematician, Fibonacci (also known as Leonardo Bigollo Pisano). It was named for the Archangel Metatron and it’s a beautiful geometric form with a unique inherent order.
Fibonacci believed the order of the universe could be understood in mathematical terms. The form itself contains the five Platonic solids – tetrahedron, hexahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron. These shapes were considered to be the building blocks of the universe, and they are central to sacred geometry.
I didn’t expect this but for me there was definitely something magical about working with Metatron’s Cube. I can easily understand why it is considered sacred. It represents the interconnectedness of life, and combining of the spiritual and physical. It also represents intelligent design and creativity.
In my own drawing and print it is both the geometric form and the stay marks that interest me. Each compliments the other – order and disorder, and each adds to the image. Disorder is part of life and to me it was important to have it merge with the elegant geometry of Metatron’s Cube. This is an intentional choice. If I wanted to show perfect geometry, I wouldn’t have done it as a collagraph. I wanted it to be imperfect. The universe is imperfect.
Worked on a collagraph of Metatron’s Cube. The first state isn’t at the point I’d like it but it’s a good start.
